Pulmonology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the health of the respiratory system. It is considered a branch of internal medicine and is related to intensive care medicine.
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine (TB and Respiratory Diseases) at MNR is actively involved in teaching, training, and research in TB & Respiratory Diseases, being part of RNTPC.
Tuberculosis is a serious health issue in our country. It’s a contagious infectious bacterial disease that mainly affects the lungs.Because of its severity MNR aims to equip the students with knowledge and practice to handle tuberculosis effectively and thus benefits society.
MNR Pulmonology department has a pulmonary function testing unit and conducts regular camps to increase awareness. Students are educated about the serious negative effects and complications of pollution, such as occupational lung diseases and lung malignancies.
The department provides inpatient care to tuberculosis, lung cancer, critically-ill patients, and other non-TB respiratory disease patients. We also offer free anti-retrovirus treatment to patients suffering from TB and HIV Co-infection.
We have facilities for various specialty investigations such as spirometry and diffusion study, arterial blood gases, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, bronchoscopic biopsy, broncho-alveolar lavage, bronchoscopic foreign body removal, CT scans, CT-guided FNAC and biopsy, pleural fluid aspiration, pleural biopsy, etc.
We perform therapeutic interventions like pleural tapping, inter-costal tube drainage, foreign body removal, ICU care, BIPAP, endotracheal intubations, and mechanical ventilation supports for critically ill patients. The department also runs various specialized clinics like Asthma and Allergy Clinic, COPD and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Clinic, Initiate MDR/XDR- TB Clinic.
The department has an intake of four PG students every year. Our students have presented many papers and posters at various national and state-level conferences.
